"The whole cause is that I am a friend on the street who claims to have 20 3D printers. His wife has to run out every three minutes to maintain the operation of the 3D printer." Tend.ai co-founder And CEO Mark Silliman said in an interview. To this end, Silliman and his two partners set up the company in February this year.
Speaking of Tend.ai's founding team, all of them are entrepreneurs: Silliman just sold his company Smartwaiver in December last year; security chief James Gentes also sold his analysis company The Social Business last year; Robert Kieffer is from Zenbe, which was acquired by Facebook in 2010.
Their ideas are straightforward. These people are not so busy with their wives, why not use a robot to do these operations? But when they got started, they found that these robots were not as simple as they thought, and now the whole industry pays more attention to the factory and assembly lines, not DIY operations.
If you follow a traditional approach, working with a "system integrator" to customize the platform, using special hardware for computer vision or web monitoring, the cost of each robot can reach tens of thousands of dollars.
"In order to reduce costs, we basically moved all the data of this system to the cloud." Silliman said: "Now you can use a $100 webcam for text recognition (OCR), as well as artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc. The function does not require any local resources. You can use any robot or any kind of camera, which is very convenient."
It is understood that the Tend.ai system contains a small computer, which is mainly used as a thin client to transfer data to the robot and camera (mounted on the robot arm) or accept data from both, all configuration data and instructions are Stored on the cloud platform.
However, training a robot can be a complete physical activity. "Users never have to write code," Silliman said. "They can lift the robots or pull their arms - these are human-machine cooperation robots, you can touch them - train them, tell them where the buttons are and where the screen is."
For example, a laser cutting machine is operated by a touch screen, you can teach the robot which part of the screen to read, then cancel the "completed" dialog box, open the lid, take away and put the product, close the lid, and then proceed A new assignment. It is reported that these actual actions (XYZ conversion, grip width, etc.) will be learned by the robot's own operating system, but management and implementation rely on the Tend.ai box. And if there is an error or the next job is cancelled, it will react differently.
Of course, if you are using a well-known brand of machines, like a common 3D printer, then you don't need to train them at all - the data in these machines is already stored in the Tend.ai database. If there is no corresponding data in the database, your training data will be shared with everyone in the system revenue database.
Silliman says their business model is standard SaaS (software as a service), where users can order their services at a monthly service fee, but they are still refining the details of the model. Tend.ai claims that their system can run machines 24/7 without manual intervention – reducing costs and increasing productivity.
In addition, if you are running hundreds or thousands of such devices and want to build a database of metrics on uptime, component wear, material utilization, etc., this system can also help.
Since Tend.ai has just been established, their system has not yet been completed. According to the plan, the company will launch a beta version of 10 to 20 users in July, and then hope to raise $2 million. They are able to recruit teams and further develop. The full operation of this system is expected to be at the end of this year or early next year.
