Beijing Printing Institute successfully developed "zero pollution" ink

The "zero pollution" pure water-based ink has recently been successfully developed and will be put into production at the end of 2014. By then, the pollution caused by ink on the packaging of milk, cigarette paper, medicines, etc. will be greatly reduced.

Ink is the basic material for printing and the key to implementing green printing. Wei Xianfu, Dean of the School of Printing and Packaging Engineering at the Beijing Institute of Printing Technology, said in an interview with reporters that most of the domestic printed materials use "gravure printing" technique. The solvent-based ink for gravure printing contains volatile organic solvents (referred to as VOC) and heavy metals. Food, medicine, children's toys and other packaging commodities cause pollution and endanger users' health.

However, the "pure water" ink successfully developed by Beijing Printing Institute solved this problem. Wei Xianfu said that the "pure water" ink does not contain any volatile organic solvents, that is, the VOC content is zero, and the proportion of heavy metals is also greatly reduced, basically achieving "zero pollution." The technology is expected to be put into production at the end of 2014. After reaching the capacity in 2015, the annual output value is expected to reach 150 million yuan.

The application of low-pollution or even "zero-pollution" inks is a key step for China to implement green printing. Green printing refers to a printing method that uses environmentally friendly materials and processes, has little pollution, low energy consumption, and easy recycling of waste products, and has little impact on the ecological environment.

Wang Yiming, a professor at the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Beijing Printing University, introduced that "green textbooks" are one of the most direct applications of green printing. Last year, 200 million volumes of primary and secondary school textbooks in the country were printed in green, accounting for 29% of the total printed textbooks, ensuring at least one person and one "green textbook"; the proportion of green textbooks in Beijing is even higher, at about 42.55%.

The "2012 Green Printing Achievement Report" released by government departments shows that since the implementation of green printing in China in 2010, the annual emission reduction of volatile organic compounds is about 1.5%, and the comprehensive cost of energy consumption and material loss is reduced by about 500 million yuan per year. The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection jointly issued a notice: Before 2015, all primary and secondary school textbooks in the country will be implemented with green printing, and the "Ten Rings" stamp representing green identity will be affixed.

At present, more than 300 enterprises across the country have obtained green printing certification. Beijing Printing Institute is building the nation's only green quality inspection center for printed publications. All printed materials, paper, etc. can be tested here to see if they meet the standards. It is expected to be officially put into use by the end of this year.
