According to a report by the World Nuclear Engineering Network on March 21, 2013, the U.S. Uranium Enrichment Company (USEC) has announced that the R & D and Demonstration (RD & D) project of the US centrifuge still conforms to the "budget and schedule."
The USEC also confirmed that in March this year, it received an additional $ 44 million in funding from the United States Department of Energy (DOE). DOE has agreed to provide US $ 280 million or 80% of the total funding of the RD & D project, and it is expected that the funds will be in place by the end of 2013.
In the project progress announcement on March 18, USEC stated that the installation of the plant support system and AC100 centrifuge for the RD & D commercial cascade has been "nearly completed", and it is expected that the demonstration operation of the commercial cascade will be carried out in the second half of 2013.
The USEC also pointed out that in the absence of greater certainty in project financing or timetables and inefficient production that will continue for a long period of time, the project will face challenges from important supplier capabilities and willingness.
USEC also pointed out that in recent months, about 300 new jobs have been added, and the number of employees engaged in RD & D projects has reached about 1,200.
The RD & D project aims to reduce technical risks and improve the prospects for commercial deployment of centrifuge technology in the United States.
