Researchers at Columbia University have developed an innovative method, AirCode, that embeds physical labels (such as barcodes and QR codes) into 3D printed objects, using air pockets to store information in 3D prints. The study has been published online, entitled "AirCode: Unobtrusive Physical Labeling for Digital Manufacturing."
According to the paper, the human eye can't detect AirCode technology and needs a computer imaging method to recover data. Researchers believe that AirCode has special applications for embedding metadata, robotic capture, and watermarking.
AirCode can also save additional information about an object. “For example, after designing an art statue, the artist can embed a link before the creation, which can be linked to a web page or artist's personal website or copyright statement that introduces the background of the statue,†the paper said.
Such techniques are also useful in 3D printed sculpture scanning. Tags provide more detail and scanning locations for objects.
After 3D printing an object with embedded cavitation, the researchers used a "computation imaging method" to scan the label.
A significant advantage of AirCode technology is that it does not require post-processing and can be integrated into existing 3D printing workflows. It also has important applications in terms of intellectual property protection. Users can 3D print objects with air codes to prove their legitimacy.
