Zhao Yiwu said that with the development of the petrochemical industry, plastics have become an indispensable material. At the same time, the problem of white pollution caused by plastic waste is becoming more and more serious, especially for the ecological environment such as ocean and land soil.
He quoted a report issued by the UN Environment Agency that the pollution caused by non-degradable plastic materials from oil has spread to every corner of the globe, and the number of plastic bags used every year in the world is as high as 5 trillion. They expand side by side and cover an area equivalent to two French sizes. However, to date, only 9% of the world's 9 billion tons of plastics have been recycled, and most of the rest have been thrown into landfills, landfills or the natural environment.

"Developing bio-based degradable materials can effectively solve these problems." Zhao Yiwu said.
Bio-based materials are new materials made from bio-chemical, chemical, and physical methods using renewable biomass as raw materials, including crops and straws. They have the advantages of environmental protection, energy conservation and emission reduction, and renewable raw materials. The category also has good biodegradability.
Zhao Yiwu introduced that many countries have included bio-based materials in their national development strategies, and China should also vigorously promote the application and development of bio-based materials.
He suggested building and improving China's bio-based materials industry, especially the bio-based biodegradable materials industry's production and application industry chain. The top-level design of the development direction of the bio-based materials industry will focus on the development of a number of materials that are in demand and capable of rapid scale, such as polylactic acid and bio-based nylon. The use of bio-based materials in the national economy and daily life should be promoted. Strengthen the classification of waste, vigorously support the degradation of compost, especially the development of household composting technology, and clarify the responsibility and obligation of producers, sellers and consumers at all levels for recycling, garbage sorting and waste composting degradation in the context of regulations.
