With the help of academic collaborators, researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) are using 3D images of holograms projected into photosensitive resins to print complex parts in 3D in a short period of time. It is reported that the stereoscopic 3D printing process prints objects at a time instead of layer by layer.
As we all know, 3D printing has several distinct technologies, such as FDM, SLM, SLA and so on. All of these 3D printing technologies process their materials in different ways, but they all have one key feature: they make objects layer by layer.
However, it is worth mentioning that LLNL has developed a holographic resin 3D printing technology that completely avoids the layer stacking method to create an object.
It is called stereoscopic 3D printing, which uses a holographic 3D projector to process the photosensitive resin at once instead of one layer at a time. The technology was developed in collaboration with researchers at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Rochester, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
According to a large number of researchers, the process of generating 3D light projections using conventional projectors (2D) or lasers (1D) has a large impact on the speed of 3D printed parts.
LLNL engineer ChrisSpadaccini explained: “This shifts manufacturing to a full 3D operation, which has never been done before. The potential impact on throughput can be huge, and if you can do well, there will still be a lot of complications. Sex."
This process defines the geometry of an object from three different directions by directing three overlapping laser beams to work together. This results in a complete 3D image being projected within the resin barrel.
Of course, the light also touches the portion of the resin that is not printed, but since the intensity of the light at the intersection of the beams is much greater, the beam is sufficient to fully and accurately cure the 3D portion in about 10 seconds. Unused resin can be discharged leaving the finished object.
