DOD releases the world's largest 3D printed micro drone series

Recently, the US Department of Defense announced that it has successfully tested a large number of 3D printed micro drones. It is reported that this batch of UAVs is called Perdix, and consists of autonomous micro drones with a wing of only 12 inches, which can adaptively form flight and self-repair.

According to 3D Tiger, in October last year, the Department of Defense conducted tests in California in collaboration with the Office of Strategic Capabilities and the Naval Air Systems Command. In the video below, you can see a group of 103 Perdix drones released by three F / A-18 Super Hornets, and then fly together, just like a group of birds flying in flight.

Surprisingly, Perdix drones are programmed to "think together". As SCO director William Roper explained, “Due to the complexity of combat, Perdix is ​​a pre-programmed synchronized individual, they are a collective creature, sharing a distributed brain ’s decision-making and adapting to each other. Because each Perdix communicates and Collaboration, so there is no leader in the drone group and can adapt to the drone entering or leaving the team.

According to SCO (in cooperation with the defense industry unit-lab), it is currently looking for companies that can manufacture Perdix drones and overcome obstacles such as battery life. The ultimate goal is for the Perdix group to consist of up to 1,000 individual micro drones.
