BASF launches two new adhesive film technologies

At an industry conference in Ludwigshafen, BASF introduced two new adhesive film technologies to representatives of the global adhesives industry. The so-called multi-layered film technique uses up to 3 different layers of film simultaneously for a carrier material by using a special multi-layer mold. For film-bonded labels, this means that there is no need for three separate production processes. An oxygen barrier layer or UV absorbing layer can be sandwiched between two layers of adhesive. Pressure-sensitive label manufacturers can reduce production costs and save production time.

BASF officials said that its innovative multi-layer technology can bring real added value to customers. The company supplies high-quality adhesive raw materials to customers, ensuring higher production efficiency and reducing production costs.

The further development of high-speed film is extremely innovative. The film uses the eco-friendly acResin® series. For the first time, BASF experts proposed the use of acResin® products to produce transparent films at speeds exceeding 400 m/min. This will produce ultra-high quality labels for the perfumery and cosmetics industries. In other words, the label is very transparent, so it can be called a labelless feel.

acResin® products are UV crosslinked acrylate hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives. The product is free of water and solvents and has advantages over traditional adhesives in processing and environmental protection. Irradiation with ultraviolet light can control the cross-linking of macromolecules on the adhesive film, thereby affecting the properties of the adhesive. If the polymer is highly cross-linked, the adhesive film will bond relatively firmly when subjected to a tensile load. Objects and adhesives will come off first, which is why a price tag can be easily peeled off without leaving any traces. In contrast, if the polymeric chains are slightly cross-linked, the polymeric chains are destroyed and leave marks on the surface before the adhesive separates from the surface of the object. By using acResin®, the adhesive strength of the adhesive layer can be varied depending on the amount of ultraviolet light irradiation.
