On March 28th, 2017, French researchers recently made innovative use of 3D printing technology to create breast implants, which can be used for reconstruction surgery after breast mastectomy. The project, called Mat(t)isse, was led by Julien Payen and Pierre-Marie Danze, Ph.D. in Life and Health, University of Lille, France, and was awarded the Legrand Textile Innovation Award on March 16.

The contents of the Mat(t)isse project include 3D printing of absorbable shell-like structures and injection of adipose tissue into the interior. This process essentially combines two current reconstruction techniques, fat injection and silicone implantation, to make the breast repair more natural and to reduce the cost and risk of surgery to a certain extent.

The standard treatment for breast reconstruction surgery is the implantation of a silicon prosthesis, which is prone to problems such as foreign body reactions. While fat injection is the use of autologous tissue in other parts of the patient, although it may be dangerous and complicated to allow the tissue to grow in a designated place, autologous tissue implantation is currently the most ideal solution and the repair results are more natural.

The Mat(t)isse project combines the merits of two existing processes – replacing silicon implants with 3D printing and injecting autologous adipose tissue, a single fat cell, into the housing. Julien Payen explains that the 3D print housing is made of bioabsorbable material and is shaped and sized by 3D scanning. It will take even seven years to optimize the product and bring it to market. Currently, Lille University has applied for patents for this technology.
